A $6.35 million upgrade is about to make the Newell Highway safer and more reliable for drivers and freight operators, with works set to begin north of Moree.
The 1.6km stretch at Tackinbri has been a long-standing concern for motorists. Early culvert works start next week, with major reconstruction to follow later in the year. The upgrades will include a wide centre line to help prevent head-on crashes, stronger pavement, and surface improvements to reduce future maintenance needs.
Transport for NSW says the design not only tackles crash risks but also considers fatigue and long-term resilience. For truckies and travellers, that means smoother, safer trips with fewer disruptions.
The Tackinbri works are part of a wider program of Newell Highway upgrades, including recent projects between Narrabri and Moree and safety improvements at North Croppa. Changed traffic conditions will be in place during construction, so motorists should expect lane closures, reduced speed limits, and allow extra travel time.
